In his address, the Chief Guest Mr. Singh while stating that such writings bring a lot of freshness, said, “The first thing about the novel that took my attention was that Nithya was writing about teenage. Teenage comes and never goes.” Appreciating Nithya for the wonderful job, he said, “Books like this are for the masses. These are all experiences which we read, we laugh, we cry. When we read them, we relate ourselves to them.”

Talking about the story behind her novel, the author R. Nithya said, “One of the reasons why I always wanted to write a high-school story is because for me, high-school was a mesmerising universe.” Stating that we all, at some stage of our lives, have experienced the illusion that we’re not good enough, she said, “‘Mistakes’ is the first thing this novel is about. Most of us, youngsters, make the mistake of filling the void within us by falling in love. And when we look for love in the wrong places, we usually find it. That’s the second thing the book is about. And it’s about resilience–how you get up when you fall down and whether you get up or not.” Nithya added that the book is about friendship, about mother-daughter relationships, about first love and “in the middle of all these things, it’s about self-esteem.” She concluded by thanking everyone who helped her get inspired for writing the book.

Congratulating Nithya for writing her book, Dr. Adnan Farooqui, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, JMI, said, “Nithya writes very well, which I’m sure gets reflected in her novel also. I hope it inspires other students as well.”

Earlier, in the welcome address, Director, Thames River Press, Mr. Kamaljeet Sood opined that the endeavours to write such kind of a book help to enhance free expression. “Nithya has dared to write about the experiences of crushes and first love that all boys and girls go through,” Mr. Sood said. “The book represents young India marching forward. For youngsters, it is a validation of emotions and hence giving them more self confidence. For parents, it is a deeper understanding of their children … something that can help in doing away with parents’ fears. I hope we can encourage young people here to be bold and imaginative as Nithya has been,” he added.

Jamia Journal caught up with R. Nithya after the event and asked her how it felt to be a published author at such a young age. “Becoming a published author was a dream I had since I was 16. Having a dream like this come true makes you happy as well as vulnerable. But for now, I just want to feel the happiness,” answered a cheerful Nithya. Talking about the role played by Jamia Journal in helping her grow as a writer, she added, “Now when I look back, I feel that on Jamia Journal, I’d written some of the stories that I didn’t know I was capable of writing.”
