Picture: On-Campus and Totally in Thawb

About the Picture: I saw this student wearing an Arabian garment, called Thawb in Arabic, on-campus in front of the department of political science on Monday, Nov. 6.

Though I did not know him, I had seen him around and I knew he was in my department. So I thought I’d stop and talk to him.

The student’s name is Munshi Zubair Haque, and he is a student of M.A. Public Administration. This is his first year in Jamia, and he comes from West Bengal.

I asked him about what he was wearing and he told me that a friend of his recently returned from Saudi Arabia and he brought back for him this traditional Saudi garment that he was wearing.

I have to hand it to him, it must take a lot of courage for a man to wear something that looks like a woman’s dress to college. Munshi has earned my respect by taking such a bold step. I for one appreciate such diversity in clothes on-campus.
