The participants had to either speak against or for the motion. The competition began with the English Debate where more than 100 students from different courses turned up and shared their view points on the topic. In their arguments, majority sought death sentence to the rapists. Though there were many students who were not in favour of the capital punishment to the rapists. They suggested that everyone has a “right to live” and should be given a second chance, in spite of whatever crime a man has committed.

This was followed by debates in Urdu and Hindi.

The participants of the Urdu debate were comparatively more enthusiastic than the other two. The audience appreciated the same and enjoyed the debate. “It was learning, inspiring and motivating experience. BOL should organise debates on such topics more often. It keeps momentum and creates a sense of responsibility towards the society” said Nargis Akhtar, an undergraduate student in the Department of Commerce and Business Studies.

The participants were judged on the basis of content of the speech, presentation and language. The Panel of judges included Mr. A.C. Kharingpam, Dr. Naved Jamal and Dr. Roohi Fatima.

The Convener of BOL- Debating Club, Dr. Sheema Aleem, co-ordinated the event along with the Co-Convenors Dr. Asmat Jahan and Dr. Naseeb Ahmad.

Prof. Tasneem Meenai, Dean of the Students’ Welfare, Jamia Millia Islamia was the Chief Guest and in her opening remarks she appreciated the members of the cultural committee for their initiatives and hard work in organising various events.

Dr. Sheema Aleem expressed her gratitude towards all the volunteers and the participants for making the event a success. She said that it has always been pleasure to be associated with the BOL and she will definitely take it to new heights in coming future.
