Prof. Talat Aziz is NOT the First Woman Officiating Vice-Chancellor of Jamia

Presently, the vice-chancellor of Jamia, Prof. Talat Ahmad, is on leave from office. In his absence, Jamia has appointed Prof. Talat Aziz from the Department of Teacher Training & Non-formal Education as the officiating vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia.

On her appointment as the acting vice-chancellor of JMI, a local Okhla news website claimed it to be an historic event. The site made the claim that Prof. Talat Aziz was the first woman officiating vice-chancellor of Jamia in its 92 year history. This led to much talk and celebration among the Jamia community; in India and abroad. The news even made it into a national daily in Saudi Arabia.

However, as Jamia Journal has learned from the university administration, the claim made by this local news site is false.

According to JMI’s Media Co-ordinator, Dr. Mukesh Ranjan, any report making the assertion that Dr. Talat Aziz is the first woman officiating vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia is “factually incorrect.”

It is factually incorrect because, according to Dr. Ranjan, in 2004, Prof. Mohini Anjum, a now former professor in the Department of Sociology, had served as an officiating vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia. Thus rendering all later claims to the title invalid.

  1. The issue is not that Prof Talat Aziz is the first lady to officiate as VC jamia, but if she is the right candiadate to take such a charge.
She is too meak and innocent to be a VC.

  2. It is quite unfortunate that Prof Talat Ahmad has been keeping himself busy in his son’s marriage, frequent visits of Kashmir, and other non-JMI engagements and his advisors/consultants have been exploiting Jamia in their own interest.
Prof Talat has been found a bit against the decisions taken by Mr Najeed Jung, and pro towards the so called academic/administrative mafia that has encroached him.
In most of the selection committees, it has been found that the VC appointed his MAN the only nominee to decide the future of Jamia.
How strange…the JMI needed a dedicated academician to contribute to the minority institution, but strangely enough, the fate of Jamia has been left to a few local decision makers who could do nothing towards the community, alma mater or the academic fields in their own romantically glorious past.

Mr VC: pls use ur own expertise, and develop jamia, and if not…don’t leave jamia to the former manpower recruiter, and an opportunist politician cum so called academician.

    A jamiaite..
