Pro-VC IGNOU, Prof. Sushma Yadav, Speaks on “India Under Modi”

The Department of Political Science, Jamia Millia Islamia, organized a seminar on the topic, “India under Modi: Kya Achhe Din Aane Wale Hain” by Professor Sushma Yadav on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 in the Seminar Room of the Department. Prof. Yadav is the pro Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University New Delhi and Chair Professor, Dr. Ambedkar Chair in Social Justice at Indian Institute of Public Administration.

Stating at the very outset that it was too early to make any definitive comments about the theme of the lecture, Professor Sushma Yadav went on to speak about the various promises that Modi-led BJP government promised in its manifesto and why it was necessary to fulfill all the promises to truly bring about ‘acche din’.

“The slogan acche din is catchy, and catchy things attract, especially human minds. But sixty days becomes too early to say whether we can be sure of good days ahead,” she said, adding however, that the slogan was an innovative idea. “Everyone was getting frustrated with the things not moving, things not getting delivered. Nothing was reaching the people. But with this slogan, the party somewhere got to the nerves of the people.”

Prof Yadav sounded pretty optimistic as she spoke of the promises listed in BJP’s Election Manifesto including the need for a vibrant democracy, empowered people, inclusive and sustainable development, quality of life in villages and cities, flourishing agriculture, robust physical and social infrastructure, entry into the global economy on competitive basis etc., commenting about the importance of each one of them.

“The youth was looking for something like an identity of India that they could be proud of. It was looking for a system and leadership which could do what they promise,” she said, emphasizing that there is a need for bringing about all these changes and improvements in order to see the good days that have been promised.
