A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Jamia Milia Islamia, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Jammu & Kashmir Government for the construction of hostels to accommodate students from the State of J&K at Jamia Milia Islamia today i.e. 9 February 2012.
The Registrar, Jamia Milia Islamia, Professor S.M. Sajid signed the MoU on behalf of Jamia Millia Islamia in the presence of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mr. Najeeb Jung.
Speaking on the occasion, the Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram congratulated the Vice-Chancellor Mr. Najeeb Jung and the Chief Minister of J&K for coming together for this project.
He saw this is as a very positive for providing higher education to students of J&K. The Chief Minister of J&K Omar Abdullah on the occasion said this step will help in providing accommodation and also bringing students from J&K into the mainstream.
The proposed hostel facility will be for 400 students of Postgraduate, Graduate and School level students (separate for boys and girls) from J&K. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 16.22 crores and the project is expected to be completed within 24 months from the date of construction.
For purpose of a healthy and integrated development, the students from J&K shall be accommodated in various hostels spread across the Jamia Campus, after completion of the building.
Mr. Najeeb Jung, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, on the occasion, reiterated his commitment to the underprivileged sections of society and to those who come from disturbed areas like the North East and Kashmir. He mentioned that Jamia had recently admitted Kashmiri students in the Jamia schools, even though it was mid session.
