(Following is a press release by the Center for North East Studies, JMI, sent on Aug. 28, 2012)
The situation in Assam has been extremely disturbing with extensive violence, including killings and arson, between different groups as well as the flight of the displaced to relief camps and as well as the fallout seen in different parts of the country, fuelled by a mixture of hate campaigns, insecurity, ignorance and prejudice.
However, the complexity of the situation in the Bodo Territorial Administered Districts as well as in other parts of the state is barely understood by many in New Delhi or elsewhere in India; ignorance, sensitivities and anxieties are underlined by the recent exodus fuelled by a fear and hate campaign.
To reflect on an extremely difficult situation as well as to look at possible keys to the future, the Centre for North East Studies is organizing a discussion on the issues at Jamia Millia Islamia, on 3 September, 2012, at the Mir Anis Hall (near the Administrative Wing). We will start at 2 pm and end by 5:30 pm. We are requesting scholars, students and professionals from across Delhi to take part in the discussion and resource persons are coming from Assam.
