On the 114 birth anniversary of Dr. Zakir Hussain on February 8, the Jamia Old Boys Association commemorated the day with a ceremonial recitation of the Holy Quran (Quran Khani) at his mausoleum on campus.
Javed Alam, president of Jamia Old Boys Association, said in an interview that they hold a Quran Khani ceremony every year on Dr. Hussain’s birth anniversary in memory of his service to Jamia Millia Islamia.
According to Jamia’s official website, Dr. Hussain served as Jamia’s Vice Chancellor in 1928 and then Chancellor in 1963.
He also served as the third president of India from 1967 to 1969.
Among the dignitaries who visited the site to pay their respects included: Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung and Khurshid Alam Khan, former chancellor of Jamia and and son-in-law of Dr. Hussain, as per Abdul Wadood Khan, one of the organizers of the event.
Salman Khursheed, minister for minority affairs and grandson of Dr. Hussain, was also expected to pay a visit, however, according to Alam, he had to cancel his scheduled visit due to unspecified official work.
