The cover article for this latest edition is titled “A Rich Canvas” that talks about Jamia’s art collection, which Jauhar claims to be “one of the richest art collection” among Indian universities today.
The M.F. Hussain Gallery of Art, according to Jauhar, houses art works by the likes of: MF Hussain, Satish Gujral, Paramjit Singh, Jagu Bhai Shah, Francis Newton Souza, Nand lal Bose, J Sultan Ali, J Swaminathan, Sripat Rai, Ameena Ahmad, and Ram Kumar.
An excerpt from the article reads:
The rich collection is the result of efforts of eminent artist A Ramachandran, who was the Head, Department of Art and Art Education, till the Nineties. It was he who procured these works over a period of time. Since the collection was rich, the faculty felt the need to have a gallery to display it. Ghazanfar Zaidi, senior faculty, recounts how they strove to have a gallery built. The gallery was inaugurated by artist Satish Gujral in the year 2008. The paintings were displayed at the inaugural exhibition. MF Husain, while he could not attend the event, sent a letter to the students, appreciating Jamia’s efforts in fostering the right atmosphere for arts. A blown-up version of the letter is displayed at the entrance of the gallery. [Link]
