Jamia organized a student cycle rally from Himachal Pradesh to Delhi, officially named “Save Water, Save Earth” to promote the environmental message of water conservation.
According to a Jamia press release, a group of 25 students (19 boys and 6 girls), along with a few others from the university, started the rally from Narkanda in Himachal Pradesh on February 19, 2013, and traveled via Shimla, Solan, Chandigarh, Sirhind, Ambala/Shahbad, Panipat to finally reach Jamia Millia Islamia on February 27, 2013, covering about 452 km.
In Himachal Pradesh, the rally was flagged off by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.
The objectives of the Rally, according to the official statement, were:
1) To generate an awareness about the preservation of our environment.
2) To provide an opportunity to our students to understand the flora and fauna of the different regions of India.
3) To expose the students to various challenges and thus develop the skills to overcome difficult situation in life and to develop their character and personality.
4) To foster Peace and National Integration among youth of the Country.
To felicitate the students on completion of their rally, Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung, and Ms. Nita Chowdhury, Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, New Delhi, were present to receive and greet the students on their return to Jamia on February 27, 2013.
