The “ABC… Campaign” held an orientation meeting for its volunteers on campus in the lawns next to the Department of English, on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013.
The ABC… Campaign is a student initiative to provide basic education to the children of construction workers presently working and residing on Jamia campus.
This was ABC… Campaign’s first meeting for this year, for which about 20 student volunteers from disciplines as varied as engineering, management, chemistry, education and public administration attended the meeting.
As pointed out by the conveners of ABC… Campaign, Asrarul Haque Jeelani and Mohammed Zakir Riyaz, both students in the Department of Social Work, the objectives of the program are to build interest for education among the children and advocate to their parents to enroll their children into public schools.
The program is scheduled to begin on Monday starting next week. Classes for the children will be conducted in their makeshift residential quarters next to the construction site between the hours of 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. everyday except Sunday.
