A sight that has started to become a common sight on campus, is of students playing the guitar. There aren’t that many, but you do see one or two such student musicians sitting in a lawn at the FX Cafe or at the central canteen, surrounded by friends and strangers alike, listening to them play in admiration.
.
Though they are all amateur musicians, who play just because they have a passion for it, they’re pretty good guitarists who also happen to have a decent singing voice.
Jamia Journal met one such student musician on campus on Tuesday, March 27, 2012.
Nazim Abbasi is a postgraduate journalism student, who also got his graduate degree from Jamia.
Nazim told Jamia Journal that he has been playing the guitar since the 11th grade. And when asked if he has had any formal guitar playing lessons, he said he has never taken any formal lessons as such, but he did learn from tutorials available on the Internet. That, and a lot of practice is how he learned to play the guitar.
Talking about his taste in music, Nazim said he is a big Metal fan, however, since he plays an acoustic guitar on campus, which is not suited for Metal music, he prefers to play songs by Pink Floyd and similar artists that are more suited for an acoustic guitar.
He goes on to say, although there is virtually no music scene in Jamia, people do appreciate him perform whenever he does. Students have been encouraging and supportive he says.
When asked if he has had any trouble with the campus police, who, besides providing security to students also play the role of moral and sometimes as fashion police, he said, no, the campus police has never given him any trouble. They have never stopped him from playing the guitar on campus.
On hearing Nazim play, it was clear to see that he loves what he does. Music for him is a passion which he has been pursuing for many years now.
