On Teachers Day Sociology Students Roll Out the Red Carpet

The Subject Association, Department of Sociology (SA-DoS) formally celebrated Teachers Day at the Department of Sociology on Thursday, Sept 5, 2013.

According to Homam Khan, a graduate student of sociology and the Joint Secretary of SA-DoS: they literally rolled out the red carpet for their teachers to walk down along with a banner welcoming them at the entrance to the department.

Formal celebrations included a cake-cutting ceremony for which they invited Dr. Vinay Kumar Srivastava, the well-known professor of Anthropology at Delhi University and the former principal of Hindu College.

A game of Tug of War was also planned between the students and teachers later in the afternoon but it could not happen on account of scheduled admission interviews for PhD candidates which the teaching faculty had to conduct in the department. Although the game of Tug of War could not happen between students and teachers, the students did, nevertheless, play the game among themselves.

On being asked about the celebrations, an elated Khan wrote in an email: “We celebrated the Teacher’s Day quite formally, i.e. with all elan :) FOR THE FIRST TIME!”

Department of Sociology was probably the only department in Jamia that formally observed Teachers Day this year.
